Frequently asked questions
3. What are the minimum requirements for making a backup? You must have one of the three situations presented below:
- » the server must have a Public IP address
- » the router in front of the server to forward a port to the server
- » if one can not meet one of the above requirements we can tie the backup service through a VPN service that will offer free enterprise services.
4. How to install it? The procedure is simple and user friendly.
We have tutorials for Windows and Linux, as well as an express installer for Linux. 5. How does it work? At the base of the software there is a driver with direct access to the HDD and monitors every change. At the first run it copies the data and archive it on one of the
selected servers. After the first copy of the data, every new backup that follows will copy only the changed data. Copies of each new backup varies depending on the
amount of data changed on the server since the initial backup. Since a copy is incremental and the data is archived, tens or hundreds of backups may take less backup
storage space, than the amount of space on the source server. 6. What data is being copied? Absolutely all the files can be copied. Even the hidden files, the ones that the user does not have access (files like /dev or /proc).
Attention, even if the backup supports an "additional" backup of MySQL, cPanel, MSSQL, MS Exchange, in fact it is not an extra copy of the data.
Making use of certain data, the backup identifies which copied files belongs to a certain database or user and matches them.
At least two implications arise here:
- » Fist one: in order for the additional backup to work, those files need to be copied (as an example, you have to copy the entire file where MySQL keeps the data, the default location is /var/lib/mysql).
- » Second one: no extra space will be used for these additional backups.
7. Does BackupRun support cPanel backup? Yes, it does.
The biggest advantage of cPanel backup is that allows to the VHM cPanel Administrator to integrate the backup in the cPanel interface.
This allows the users (and sub users if this is the case) to access themselves the accounts and restore files.
But be careful because the cPanel backup doesn't copy the user settings.
So if a user is deleted from cPanel, this will not be restored individually from BackupRun, but only with the entire system.
So don't forget to activate the cPanel backup account. 8. Is MySQL, MSSQL supported? Yes, of course.
But, because the data is being coped binary and there are no exports, you can do a full restoration of the data base. Exports can not be generated. 11. How long it takes to run a backup? Only the first backup will take longer, but this is based on the client's quantity of data and Internet connection.
The second backup will last only a couple of minutes. 14. Where is my data backed up? For the standard backup the data is being saved in one of the existing POPs - clients choice.
And if you are an Enterprise customer your data will be backed up as well on a designated POP and further more, for extra safety, it will also be backed up on another continent. 15. How about technical support for my BackupRun backup? We offer support over the phone or Email.
The customer comes first! this means that we are opened for suggestions to change and adapt to the client's needs.
All you have to do is tell us your needs and we'll do our best to accomplish that! 16. What are the advantages of using BackupRun vs a traditional backup method? The first rule of the backup states like this:
the risk of loosing data decreases in proportion with the distance the data are being saved.
We do not recommend the data to be backed up in the same POP where the servers are running!
- » the costs to make in house backups are usually much greater that outsourcing this service
- » backup data is encrypted for a better protection
